After the completion of my first week of work i have made 2 very quick realizations. Firstly, i miss working and as strange as that sounds its the truth. I enjoy using my brain and being faced with having to juggle work and solve problems it motivates me to keep getting better at what im doing with my ‘career life’. Secondly i enjoy weekends much more when i know i’ve actually had to be somewhere all week.
So this week was my first week at my new job, its a great environment to work in and all the people ive met so far are super nice. Its just been a bunch of training and helping out with some affiliate marketing stuff, but so far so good. I spent wednesday afternoon at a trade event for our client, which was pretty fun. Then the rest of the week was spent trying to learn the company processes, client background, and general ‘getting up to speed’. One thing which i was grossly under prepared for was the US business language and how often it is used in a formal way. Everyone here sounds like a 1980s wall st banker, touch base, take this offline, reach out, loop in. All of these redundant terms to say something which could be expressed much simpler. Im sure ill probably start spouting off this custom language by the end of the year, but ill atleast do it with an Australian accent
Today i carved my first ever pumpkin >> photos here ! now that was a blast, Halloween seems to be a big deal here and i cant wait for the parties next weekend. My girlfriend has to work so more likely than not i will be partying with my house mate at some dress up party. Everyone here gets into a costume for Halloween so ive decided to be Raphael from TMNT for the occassion. My girlfriend is helping me make the costume, and by helping i mean making the entire thing. Should be a fun night.
Last night i met up with my Australian friend and we went and saw one of his friends band play for the CMJ festival in the lower east side. Great band and a great venue. Free drinks all night which led to my downfall for the rest of the night. I ended up taking a group of people with me back to my girlfriends bar at around 2am, this is where we eventually ended up as i always like to end up there if im still in Manhattan by 2 or 3am. That way i have only 1 hour more to wait for my girlfriend to finish work. The lives of a 9-5 office guy with a 7pm to 4am bartender are often complicated to schedule but we try and it works. We still never spend time apart when we can and literally have hung out every single day ive been here except 3.
Next week is Halloween and the week after is my girlfriends bday. On friday night 6th Nov im going to watch my first NBA game, its the Knicks vs Cavs so i get to watch Lebron James and Shaq absolutely smash the Knicks at the garden. The tickets are pretty expensive but it will be a great game and ive always wanted to watch an nba game. Plus Lebron James in the flesh would be amazing to watch, seeing as though i missed the whole Jordan era. There are alot of things i talk to my girlfriend about growing up in the US and i feel like i was raised in the wrong country. Everything she has grown up with sounds like an american movie, but its her real life. I think this country would be great to be a kid in, if your parents could afford to give you a fun & safe life, otherwise….. not so much
For now there’s nothing else to report, work is going good, Girlfriend is going good, money is going.. away from me. I really need to get paid. Still living the dream
